My wife bought a Kindle some time ago – and at the time I thought – not another waste of money.
But I have to say it’s been quite inspiring. I’ve read a few things which you can download onto your Kindle from the Amazon store absolutely free of charge.
I recently finished “The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes” by Arthur Conan Doyle. This I have to say, was, to my surprise, a really pleasant read, in fact I was disappointed when I got to the end of it as I wanted to read more.
The 12 stories in this collection are:
- A Scandal in Bohemia
- The Adventure of the Red-Headed League
- A Case of Identity
- The Boscombe Valley Mystery
- The Five Orange Pips
- The Man with the Twisted Lip
- The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle
- The Adventure of the Speckled Band
- The Adventure of the Engineer’s Thumb
- The Adventure of the Noble Bachelor
- The Adventure of the Beryl Coronet
- The Adventure of the Copper Beeches
Before that I read “The Etymologicon” by Mark Forsyth which was a really interesting read full of insight. Unfortunately as I get older I won’t remember 5% of the “amazing derivation of words”…and I don’t use that phrase sarcastically!
For instance most people have heard that the Tennis expression “Love” meaning nothing (zero) is a corruption of the french word for l’oeuf, meaning egg, because an egg looks a bit like a nought (zero). Apparently this is a myth! The real reason is love is nothing in tennis is because those who do something for the love of it do it for nothing. Love therefore became a synonym for nothing!
This book is packed with wonderful insights such as that.
I’m currently reading “The Boys from Brazil” by Ira Levin which is enjoyable – and i’ll continue with that as soon as i’ve finished this post!
So those are my 3 free kindle books to download recommendations.
